For two weeks only, we’re giving a workshop at Royal Academy of Art, The Hague about the contemporary meaning, usage of the mask and new strategies where masking is applied today. We’re guest teachers at PlayLab, the class of Roosje Klap and Job Wouters. Last week, students came up with quite some good examples. Face-kini being one.
What we learned in the West is that the skin tan is basically a business model and one of the main reasons for going to the beach. While in China, some are going to extraordinary lengths to avoid getting a bit of sun with a new item of beachwear – dubbed the Facekini – causing something of a stir in the coastal tourist city of Qingdao, Shandong Province.

The Trending Topic is an online magazine about Post Internet behavior. You can’t think away The Internet anymore. You cannot create something contemporary without taking its effects into account. The Internet is no longer just a promise, it’s a fact. The first issue, #OPTIMZE., is made by the 2nd year graphic design students of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie as an assignment posed by Jonathan Puckey and Pinar Demirdag.

One half of the Pinar&Viola is now teaching at Rietveld Academy, together with Jonathan Puckey.
The assignment consists of making the first issue of the online magazine #TrendingTopic together surrounding the theme OPTIMIZE. #TrendingTopic is an online magazine about Post Internet behavior. You can’t think away The Internet anymore. You cannot create something contemporary without taking its effects into account. The Internet is no longer just a promise, it’s a fact. According to the quote above, you might not even want to use the word technology anymore to describe it. #TrendingTopic uses The Internet, technology and everything else which relates to au courant as its paintbrush.
Shout out for all the students, they did a great job for the first week. Here are some of the first research examples that they came up with.

Two weeks ago, we gave a workshop at ArtEz to the students of 3rd year graphic design, where we asked them to make a seamless ecstatic pattern.
Big up for all, they surprised us with their break neck speed of working. Here is a pattern done by Nils Rotgans.
