Las Botas Picudas Tribales
Botas picudas, botas vaqueras exóticas or, simply, pointy boots are the dancing apparatus of mexican electronic tribal music dancers. A trend and an ornament originated in small villages, it has crept up its way towards the US – to name a few states, Texas, North Caroline Florida and Mississippi.
Ridiculed by many, the boots are seen as things worn only by chuntaros, the name for northern mexican natives and a derogative term for uncultured lower class citizens. And yet, they are objects of folk craftsmanship, symbols of pride not only for their bearers, but for their creators, always in search of creative solutions on how to make longer and pointier boots.

Undressed ‘n Defeating
FEMEN is a Ukrainian protest group based in Kiev, founded in 2008. The organization became internationally known for organizing topless protests against sex tourists, international marriage agencies, sexism and other social, national and international ills. Some of the goals of the organization are: “To develop leadership, intellectual and moral qualities of the young women in Ukraine” and “To build up the image of Ukraine, the country with great opportunities for women”.
Female university students between 18 and 20 years old form the backbone of the movement. The goal of the organization is “to shake women in Ukraine, making them socially active; to organize in 2017 a women’s revolution.”
FEMEN justifies its provocative methods stating “This is the only way to be heard in this country. If we staged simple protests with banners, then our claims would not have been noticed”.

Asgarda amazons
Riot grrrls of the Amazon variety. Amidst the Ukraine’s high rates of sex trafficking and gender oppression, a new movement of empowered women takes form—Asgarda—a tribe of Ukrainian women, mostly students, who live together in the Carpathian Mountains seeking complete autonomy from men. Approximately 150 women live together under the leadership of 30-something Katerina Tarnousk. Reviving the tribal traditions of the Scythian Amazons of ancient Greek mythology, the Asgarda train in martial arts, taught by former Soviet karate master, Volodymyr Stepanovytch, and learn life skills and sciences in order to become ideal women. French photographer Guillaume Herbaut met the Asgarda and documented their daily life and studies.
