Apaçi car pimping

Apaçi is quite a cool Turkish word. Its commonly used among men, and its meaning comes close to something (especially cars, hair, outfit and manners) that is pimped-up with an admiration to the West, yet customized with a Turkish, folk, traditional and sometimes Islamic touch. Apaçi car pimping can be considered as a small subculture in Turkey.

Lo-life was a black gang movement in New York in the late 80s and early 90s. Just as Britain’s football casuals adopted Lacoste as a uniform, it was an aspirational working-class and criminal appropriation of conspicuously upper-class sportswear. Lo-life gets its name from Ralph Lauren’s Polo brand. It’s Ralph’s cheaper diffusion label, and also makes gear for rich-people activities like sailing and skiing. An original lo-life kid Rack-Lo organises get togethers for fans of Polo’s early 90s colourful, graphic peak, and is considered the authority on lo-life style. (via Vice magazine)

Sweater Art

Coogi is a fashion label known for its colorful and high quality knitwear. The colorful clothing comes from Australia and was launched in 1969.

Coogi sweaters are culture icons and known for their expensive costs and complex textured knitwear. But it wasn’t until Bill Cosby’s Heathcliff Huxtable sported them on “The Cosby Show” in the ’80s that the colorful sweaters really took off. When The Notorious B.I.G. wore a Coogi in magazine the Source (1995) with the Twin Towers behind him — the look exploded in the hip-hop scene. The sweaters costed around $300 - $400 and the special editions around $600 - $700.

Biggie even rapped about the sweater:
“Living better now, Coogi sweater now” and “I stay Coogi down to the socks, rings and watch filled with rocks“.

Chinese gangsta glam *leaked*

A series of garish and violent photographs claiming to be leaked from a gangster’s mobile phone have become an online sensation, attracting nearly 5million hits.
The collection of snaps were anonymously uploaded to an image website under the heading ‘Pics from a Chinese gangster’s phone’. In the album, a young but portly Chinese man shows off his love for stacks of cash, German sports cars, parading around topless and dishing out savage beatings.

The series of shots have now been viewed more than 4.5million times in less than two days, attracting interest from around the world. One blogger said: ‘Reddit found an album of pictures ripped off a lost cell phone, normally nothing special, you’re just hoping to find some sext’s and amateur porn. ‘Except this time there’s no porn, but a bunch of pictures of what looks to be a Chinese gangster and his baller ass life style.’

Woman’s day special edition, Shamsia Hassani

Shamsia Hassani and her friend and fellow artist Qasem Foushanji are Afghanistan’s first street artists who use graffiti to chronicle violence and oppression.

The female-male duo surreptitiously spray-paint the crumbling and dilapidated walls of buildings in the capital Kabul, abandoned and destroyed during 30 years of war that still rages today.
Talking of her woman on the steps, Shamsia Hassani, 24, said: “She is wondering if she can get up, or if she will fall down. Women in Afghanistan need to be careful with every step they take.”

The austere rule of the Taliban frowned upon painting and banned images depicting peoples’ faces, saying it was un-Islamic. They banned cinema, music and theatre outright.
Both Hassani and Foushanji said that stigma translates into harassment and disapproval from government officials. And like graffiti artists in other countries, they face attempts to stop them spray-painting public buildings.
